Buffalo Trace Distillery is releasing its third 20-year-old Double Eagle Very Rare bourbon.
Originally introduced in 2019 and bottled at 90 proof, this year’s release will be the third edition and delivers the highest proof to date. Bottled at 101 proof (50.5% ABV) this edition will share the same proof as Eagle Rare 17 from the highly sought-after Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC) and pays homage to the original proof of Eagle Rare Bourbon when it was first introduced back in 1975.
This bourbon was slept for two decades on the lower floors for Buffalo Trace’s warehouses, which is twice as long as the standard 10-year-old Eagle Rare Bourbon.
Presented in a metallic silver box with two sliding doors that reveal a hand-blown crystal decanter which features two crystal eagles, one inside of the bottle and the other serving as the bottle stopper. Inside the box you will also receive an individually numbered letter of authenticity with specific info for this collection.
Tasting notes for this 20-year-old bourbon include a nose of dark cherries and creamy caramel, on the palate, dark chocolate, smoked oak and dates, followed by a long, complex finish of cinnamon, anise and oak.
We will have to take Buffalo Trace Distillery’s word for it at the moment. We will be sure to report back should we happen to get a taste of this one.
Double Eagle Very Rare is expected to hit shelves this month with a suggested retail price of $2,000. However, with only 199 bottles being released we expect a “Very Rare” chance that this one ends up in our personal collection. Happy hunting!
