Elijah Craig Barrel Proof & Larceny Barrel Proof A123 Releases
Heaven Hill Distillery is leading off 2023 with two new barrel proof A123 expressions with very similar proof points. It just so happens that this wasn’t done by design but by mere chance.
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof A123 is a bourbon with a minimum age statement of 12 years and was bottled at 125.6 proof. For this expression, Heaven Hill uses its standard bourbon mashbill of 78% corn, 12% malted barley and 10% rye.
The second A123 barrel proof release is from Larceny. This wheated bourbon uses the 68% Corn, 20% Wheat, 12% Malted Barley mash bill that replaces the rye grain with wheat, giving it a smoother and sweeter flavor profile. After resting in the barrel for six to eight years, the liquid is batch blended and then bottled at barrel proof of 125.8 / 62.9 ABV.
If you are wondering what this A123 code means, don’t worry, we will have you talking the Heaven Hill lingo in no time. The distillery uses a unique naming system to signify its batch codes for these types of releases and are listed on the front of the bottles. Our guide below makes it easy and breaks down the label.
FIRST LETTER: Tells you which release it came from, starting with “A” for the first release of the year, “B” for the second release, “C” for the third release.
FIRST NUMBER: Tells you what month it was released: January, May or September.
LAST TWO NUMBERS: Tells you what year it was released.
A123 means that this is the first release in January of 2023. The second (B523) and third batches (C923) of each of these barrel-proof bourbons will launch later this year in May (Derby Month) and September (Bourbon Heritage Month).
Be sure to also check out our review & tasting notes of Larceny Barrel Proof C921.
Each of these releases are now available with a suggested retail price of $69.99. Happy Hunting!
